Under the Mountains (1920) tells the tale of Márta, a mill-owner entangled in a complex web of relationships. She is involved with a carefree landowner, while Sebastiano, a man burdened by debt, seeks to marry Lujza, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. To avoid scandal, Sebastiano arranges for Márta to wed Pedro, a gentle mountain shepherd who once saved his life. Márta reveals her past to Pedro, who magnanimously pardons her. Lujza, discovering Sebastiano's infidelity, ends their engagement. Sebastiano then attempts to reclaim Márta from Pedro, leading to a violent confrontation. In the struggle, Sebastiano is fatally wounded by his own knife. Pedro, with his love for Márta, retreats to the mountains, seeking solace and escape from the turmoil.
