Floundering (1994) presents a biting and unconventional social satire set in the aftermath of the Los Angeles riots. The narrative revolves around John Boyz, a directionless thirty-something resident of Venice Beach, grappling with the existential crisis of finding purpose in life. Despite his desire to make a difference, John is paralyzed by apathy and an overwhelming sense of dread, leading to chronic insomnia. His days are filled with observing the world around him through his binoculars, meticulously documenting the mundane details of his surroundings, such as the steady march of ants across his kitchen counter. John's life is a series of meaningless days, punctuated by his compulsive viewing of homemade videos of the LA riots, searching for some elusive clue to make sense of his existence. As the city's social fabric begins to disintegrate, John's own fragile life teeters on the brink of collapse.
