A Summer Tale (1976) unfolds in a late 19th-century Romanian village, where the once-powerful but now impoverished aristocratic Comanesteanu family holds sway. The village faces a harsh reality: poor harvests and hungry peasants demanding their rights, while lease-holders exploit them. The aristocrats are ousted by their former lease-holders, who rise to become wealthy landowners. Leading this new elite is Tanase Scatiu, a ruthless and ambitious man determined to control the village. His plan involves marrying Tincuta, a member of the disgraced Comanesteanu family, who is deeply in debt to him. Despite her love for her cousin Mihai, Tincuta is compelled to marry Tanase, granting him legal ownership of the village. Tanase's brutal rule sparks another peasant uprising, this time against their new tyrant.
