The General (1926) follows the adventures of Johnny Gray, a dedicated engineer for the Western and Atlantic Flyer, who has a deep affection for his locomotive, "The General," and his sweetheart, Annabelle Lee. When the Civil War begins, Johnny is initially rejected from enlisting due to his crucial role as an engineer. A misunderstanding leads Annabelle and her family to believe Johnny is a coward. A year later, Union soldiers, led by Captain Anderson, commandeer Johnny's train, with Annabelle unwittingly on board. Johnny pursues them in a thrilling chase filled with mishaps and comedic events. Deep into enemy territory, the Union soldiers discover Johnny is alone on the train, leading to a dramatic turn of events.
