Experiment in Terror (1962) features Glenn Ford as FBI agent John Ripley in Blake Edwards's sole venture into the thriller genre. When a mysterious man with asthma (Ross Martin) threatens bank teller Kelly Sherwood (Lee Remick) in her San Francisco home, he demands she steal $100,000 from her workplace to save her teenage sister, Toby (Stefanie Powers), from harm. Despite her terror, Kelly contacts the FBI, and Ripley instructs her to comply. Recognizing the extortionist's asthma, Ripley identifies him as Red Lynch, a former convict with a murder conviction. His efforts to gather information from Lynch's ex-girlfriend, Lisa Soong (Anita Loo), are thwarted when he learns that Lynch had paid for her disabled son's medical care. As law enforcement tightens the net around Lynch, he kidnaps Toby, planning to keep her until his demands are fulfilled. Edwards's adept use of daytime noir and San Francisco settings, particularly the climactic scene at Candlestick Park, enhances the film's tension. Martin's portrayal of the wheezing psychopath and Henry Mancini's ominous score are standout elements.
