The Message (1977) is a grand historical drama that delves into the origins of the Islamic faith and the life of the prophet Mohammed, who, in line with Islamic beliefs, is neither seen nor heard throughout the film. Set in 7th-century Mecca, the narrative begins with Mohammed receiving a divine vision from the Angel Gabriel, who commands him to guide the people of Mecca to abandon the 300 idols of the Kaaba and embrace the worship of the one true God. Mohammed's courageous stand against the corrupt political and military leaders of Mecca leads to a series of events that culminate in a struggle for liberation. With the support of his uncle, the valiant warrior Hamza (portrayed by Anthony Quinn), Mohammed and his followers embark on a journey to free Mecca in the name of God. The film, initially released in the U.S. as "Mohammed, Messenger of God," sparked significant controversy during its production and release. Misconceptions about the film's content, including rumors that Mohammed would be depicted on screen and potentially played by actors like Charlton Heston or Peter O'Toole, led to protests by Muslim extremists. To address these concerns, director Moustapha Akkad enlisted a team of respected Islamic clerics as technical advisors. The film was produced in two versions: one in English and one in Arabic, titled "Al-Ris-Alah," with some roles recast to accommodate language differences.
