Harakiri (1919) unfolds with a Buddhist priest's desire for the Daimyo's daughter to join him in the Forbidden Garden as a priest. The Daimyo, influenced by his time in Europe, believes his daughter should choose her own path. However, societal pressures lead to his downfall, and he is forced to perform harakiri. The daughter then encounters Olaf, a European officer, and the two fall in love, eventually marrying. Olaf's return to Europe leaves her heartbroken, and she gives birth to their child while awaiting his return. Four years later, Olaf returns to Japan with his new European wife, complicating the emotional landscape further.
