Thunder Trail (1937) follows the harrowing journey of John Ames (William Duncan) and his wagon team, laden with gold bound for California. Their journey takes a tragic turn when they are ambushed by Lee Tate (Charles Bickford) and his outlaw gang. Only John's two young sons, Dick Ames (Gene Reynolds) and Bob Ames (Billy Lee), manage to escape the carnage. Bob is captured by Tate, who raises him as his own, while Dick, presumed dead, is discovered by Rafael Lopez (J. Carroll Naish), a Mexican prospector. Years later, Dick, now known as "Arizona" (Gilbert Roland), and Lopez arrive in a small town where Tate and his men have taken control. Tate is involved in a scheme to steal a gold mine from Jim Morgan (Barlowe Borland) and his daughter Amy (Marsha Hunt). "Arizona" recognizes Tate as the leader of the massacre from years past and seeks evidence of his guilt. A confrontation ensues with Bob (James Craig), who challenges "Arizona." During their fight, "Arizona" notices an old scar on Bob, revealing their familial bond. Together, the brothers join forces to drive Tate and his gang out of the town.
