Der Scout (1983) is inspired by actual historical events. In the late 1970s, the U.S. Army began relocating Indian tribes west of the Rocky Mountains into reservations following the conclusion of conflicts with the Sioux. Among these tribes were the peaceful Nez Perces, known for their hunting and fishing skills. Colonel Howard's cavalry seizes the Nez Perces' horses to prevent their escape to Canada, the tribe's only viable option to avoid the hardships of reservation life. The deputy chief, White Feather, is tasked with the seemingly impossible mission of retrieving the stolen herd. His prospects improve when he learns from Cayuse scouts that Fort Lapwai, the Americans' intended destination, has been destroyed, and Howard's group is in disarray. The Cayuse pursue the cavalry, and both groups converge at the ruins of the fort.
