I, a Negro (1958) follows the journey of two Nigerien men who migrate to Treichville, a impoverished district of Abidjan, the capital of Ivory Coast. The protagonists, who adopt the pseudonyms Eddie Constantine and Edward G. Robinson, navigate their new environment while grappling with the clash between traditional African customs and the influx of Western influences. Through their daily experiences, the film offers a glimpse into their aspirations and the challenges they face. Directed by Jean Rouch, this docudrama predates many seminal works of the French New Wave and served as a significant inspiration for the movement. It was recognized with a French Film Critics award in 1959.
