Accattone (1961) presents a stark and unflinching portrayal of a pimp navigating the grimy streets of Rome. Vittorio Accattone, the central figure, has never known the value of hard work, relying instead on the earnings of his companion, Maddalena, who turns to prostitution to support them. However, Maddalena's arrest sets off a chain of events that leads to Accattone's downfall. Struggling with hunger, he resorts to begging at churches and even reaches out to his estranged wife and son. When a naive and innocent peasant worker named Stella enters his life, Accattone desperately seeks a way, whether honest or dishonest, to regain his former prosperity.
