Hiroshima mon amour (1959) follows a young French actress who is in Japan to film an anti-war movie in the reconstructed city of Hiroshima, a place that was once obliterated by a nuclear explosion during World War II. During her stay, she engages in a passionate affair with a Japanese architect, despite both of them being content in their respective marriages. The actress acknowledges that her time in Japan is limited and that she will soon return to her life in Paris. However, she chooses to spend one more night with her lover. Over a cup of coffee at a café, she shares the poignant tale of her first love, a German soldier she met during the war, and the heartbreaking consequences that followed.
