The Forest (2012) is set in 1936 during the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Anarchist militias seize control of Lower Aragón, where Ramón and his wife Dora conceal an ancient family secret: enigmatic lights that manifest near the woods around their rural estate. Legend has it, these lights serve as a portal to another realm from which no one ever returns. When an anarchist smitten with Dora attempts to eliminate Ramón, he is compelled to enter the lights and vanishes. With a stellar cast, the film blends the harsh realities of war-torn Spain with elements of the supernatural, drawing comparisons to Guillermo del Toro’s atmospheric and haunting narratives.
