Knetter (2005) follows the life of Bonnie, a nine-year-old girl living in the Netherlands with her family. Bonnie's family shares a deep affection for elephants, a passion inherited from her great-grandfather who worked in an African game reserve. Bonnie believes this connection has instilled elephant-like instincts within her. Her mother, Lis, struggles with bipolar disorder, leading to periods of extreme lethargy and impulsive behavior. Bonnie's grandmother steps in to maintain the family's stability, but her sudden death in a car accident leaves Bonnie as the family's primary caretaker. Bonnie must now manage household tasks, ensure her mother takes her medication, and evade Jorien, a social worker intent on placing her in foster care. When Bonnie's school friend Koos welcomes a new sibling, Bonnie sees an opportunity to address her own family's challenges.
