Trouble in Paradise (1932) unfolds in the romantic and deceitful world of Venice, where Lily (Miriam Hopkins), a cunning pickpocket masquerading as a countess, crosses paths with the renowned con artist Gaston Monescu (Herbert Marshall), who is disguised as a Baron. The two quickly become enamored with each other. Gaston successfully swindles the wealthy aristocrat François Fileba and escapes with Lily before his deception is uncovered. Nearly a year later, the duo finds themselves in Paris, where Gaston manages to steal a diamond-encrusted purse from the wealthy widow Mariette Colet. However, he returns it to her, captivating her so thoroughly that she hires him as her personal secretary.
