Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) is set in the late 19th century in a small village in North India, where severe drought conditions have left the villagers struggling. The British captain, Andrew Russell, imposes an exorbitant tax increase, known as the lagaan, on the villagers. When the villagers' representatives approach Captain Russell to negotiate, he presents an unusual challenge: a cricket match between his team and a team of villagers. If the villagers win, their tax burden will be lifted for three years; if they lose, they must pay triple the lagaan. A young and spirited villager named Bhuvan steps forward to accept the challenge and begins assembling a team of villagers to compete against their colonial oppressors.
