Port of Shadows (1938) follows the journey of Jean, a deserter who arrives under the cover of darkness in the bustling port city of Le Havre, eager to escape his past and find a way out of the country. Through a series of fortunate events, Jean acquires civilian attire, some cash, a passport, and an unexpected canine companion. Along the way, he crosses paths with Nelly, a 17-year-old girl who has been forced to grow up too quickly in a world where men, including her boyfriend Maurice, her supposed guardian Zabel, and the local thug Lucien, all have designs on her. Jean becomes smitten with Nelly and steps in to protect her from Lucien's advances, empowering her to assert her independence. As a ship bound for Venezuela prepares to depart, Jean and Nelly must decide if their dreams of a fresh start can become a reality or if they are destined to remain just that—dreams.
