The Champ (1931) follows the story of Dink Purcell, a young boy who deeply cares for his father, Andy "Champ" Purcell, a former heavyweight champion struggling with alcoholism and gambling. Despite their challenging living conditions, Dink's love for his father remains unwavering. Andy's life takes a turn when he wins a racehorse through gambling and gifts it to Dink. They enter the horse in a race at a Tijuana track, where Dink meets Linda Carleton, a fellow racehorse owner. The two form an instant connection, but complications arise when Linda's wealthy husband recognizes Andy and realizes Dink is Linda's son from their past marriage. Andy initially refuses to let Dink spend extended time with the Carletons, but after losing the horse in a gambling spree and ending up in jail, he acknowledges that Dink's future is better with his mother. Dink, however, returns to his father, inspiring Andy to seek redemption. With the help of his managers, Andy begins training for a boxing match against the Mexican champion.
