The Great Dictator (1940) is set in the 1930s, where the fictional nation of Tomania is ruled by the tyrannical Adenoid Hynkel, who harbors ambitions of global conquest. Meanwhile, in the Jewish quarter of the capital, a humble barber resides, bearing an uncanny resemblance to Hynkel. During World War I, the barber had rescued a pilot named Schultz, who has since risen to a high-ranking military position. Schultz, in turn, safeguards the barber's neighborhood from anti-Semitic threats. However, Schultz's actions lead to his arrest, and both he and the barber are sent to a concentration camp. After their escape, the barber is mistaken for Hynkel and seizes the chance to deliver a powerful radio address in the dictator's stead.
