Persepolis (2007) unfolds in Tehran, 1978, where an eight-year-old girl named Marjane harbors aspirations of becoming a prophet to save the world. Nurtured by her progressive and educated parents and beloved by her grandmother, Marjane closely follows the events leading to the collapse of the Shah's oppressive regime. The establishment of the new Islamic Republic brings the 'Guardians of the Revolution,' who impose strict rules on dress and behavior. Marjane, now required to wear the veil, yearns to be a revolutionary. The city soon faces bombardment during the war against Iraq, leading to severe daily repression, disappearances, and hardships. As her surroundings grow more perilous, Marjane's rebellious nature becomes a significant concern. Her parents decide to send her to Austria for safety. In Vienna, 14-year-old Marjane encounters another revolution: adolescence, freedom, and the exhilaration of love, but also the challenges of exile, loneliness, and the harsh reality of being an outsider.
