1937 · Movie · 111 min. · United States

A Day at the Races (1937) follows the story of Judy, who runs a sanitarium under threat from the local villain, Morgan, who plans to convert it into a casino. Judy receives assistance from an unlikely group: Dr. Hugo Hackenbush, a horse doctor working illegally as the sanitarium's director; Tony, a helpful employee; and Stuffy, a former jockey of Morgan's. Judy's boyfriend, Gil, a singer, has invested all his savings in Hi Hat, a horse he believes will win enough to clear the sanitarium's debts. When Gil realizes Hi Hat is a jumper rather than a racer, the group aims to win a significant steeplechase race. Meanwhile, Morgan and his men attempt to sabotage the horse's participation. The film also features Margaret Dumont as a wealthy hypochondriac who might provide financial relief to the sanitarium.
