The Fortress (1994) unfolds in the latter part of the 1980s, a time when the ruling regime is weary, yet change seems distant. Some individuals seek refuge in their personal lives, while others choose to leave. Those unwilling to conform often find themselves on the fringes of society. For instance, Ewald, a 40-year-old intellectual, struggles to practice his profession due to his inability to align with the political regime's demands. He ekes out a living and is currently tasked with gauging the water capacity of a well near a fortress. Ewald resides in a mobile home, assesses the water source's output, and forms an unusual bond with the fortress's commanding officer. Their friendship is an odd, atypical connection between two men of contrasting personalities, united by a sense of isolation, a desire for authenticity, and a mutual respect born out of understanding each other.
