Purple Noon (1960) follows the tale of Tom Ripley, portrayed by Alain Delon, an American sent to Europe with all expenses covered to persuade his friend, the wayward playboy Philippe Greenleaf (Maurice Ronet), to return to San Francisco as per the wealthy Greenleaf family's wishes. Initially, the duo indulges in the lavish life in Italy, much to the frustration of Philippe's long-suffering fiancée, Marge (Marie Laforet). However, as Tom's financial resources dwindle, it becomes clear that Philippe has no plans to return to the U.S., leading Tom to contemplate more sinister methods to sustain his opulent lifestyle.
