One Is Guilty (1934) follows the intricate tale of a murdered boxing champion, Kid Roberts, whose lifeless body is discovered in an unoccupied apartment at the Rexford Arms. The only clues found on the victim are a letter addressed to his manager, Jack Allan, and some feminine jewelry. Inspector Trent is summoned to the crime scene, where he uncovers a woman's scarf and a lipstick-marked cigarette butt. His initial suspicion falls on Sally Grey, another resident of the building, but her gun does not match the murder weapon. Trent's investigation takes a turn when he spots Lola Deveroux, the wife of the building's owner, Wells Deveroux, sneaking into the apartment. It is revealed that both the scarf and the cigarette belong to Lola. Trent's probe deepens as he finds Allan in the apartment of Mabel Kane, Roberts' sweetheart and a cabaret performer. Their alibis for the night of the murder do not align. Trent's search of the apartment yields a theatre seat stub, which is later stolen by an unknown assailant who leaves Trent unconscious. Sally finds Trent and he recalls the seat number, leading the police to search for attendees of that night's performance. Meanwhile, Allan is found dead with another lipstick-stained cigarette butt nearby. Mabel reveals to Trent that she had seen an unknown woman with both Roberts and Wells. Wells becomes suspicious of his wife when he discovers a missing bullet from his gun. Lola admits to an affair with Roberts but denies killing him. Harley, the man seated behind the mystery seat in the theatre, contacts the police and remembers that his watch was missing its minute hand. Trent notices that Wells' watch is also missing its minute hand, leading him to accuse Wells of murdering Roberts out of jealousy and then killing Allan when the manager uncovered the truth. Wells attempts to flee but is captured by Trent. With the case resolved, Trent is now free to pursue Sally, rather than fugitives.
