The Manhattan Project (1986) follows the story of 17-year-old Paul Stephens (Christopher Collet) and his journalist-aspiring girlfriend Jenny Anderman (Cynthia Nixon), who aim to expose a clandestine nuclear facility hidden within a seemingly ordinary pharmaceutical research plant in their hometown of Ithaca, NY. Meanwhile, Dr. John Mathewson (John Lithgow), who poses as a doctor at the facility, becomes romantically involved with Paul's mother, Elizabeth (Jill Eikenberry), and befriends Paul. While Dr. Mathewson is visiting, Paul and Jenny seize the opportunity to steal plutonium and construct their own atomic bomb, intending to showcase it at a science fair in New York City. The film blends humor and suspense, illustrating the potential consequences when a teenage prodigy, armed with internet resources, published books, and unclassified government documents, attempts to build a nuclear bomb for a science fair competition.
