The Awful Truth (1937) follows the whirlwind lives of Jerry and Lucy Warriner, a high-society couple in New York City who, despite their initial happiness, begin to question each other's loyalty. This leads them to decide on a divorce, with Lucy gaining custody of their beloved dog and Jerry securing visitation rights. Before their divorce is finalized, both Jerry and Lucy become engaged to new partners. Lucy meets Dan Leeson, a wealthy but dull Oklahoma oil man accompanied by his mother, while Jerry pursues Barbara Vance, a debutante and heiress. Their attempts to sabotage each other's new relationships result in a series of comedic mishaps and misunderstandings.
