Casualties of War (1989) follows the harrowing journey of Eriksson (Michael J. Fox), a naive American soldier who finds himself thrust into the brutal reality of the Vietnam War. Assigned to a unit led by the disillusioned Sergeant Tony Meserve (Sean Penn), Eriksson quickly realizes that his new comrades have been hardened by months of jungle warfare. Meserve, on the verge of completing his final mission, has lost his motivation and empathy for his troops. When his plans to visit a prostitute in a nearby town are thwarted, Meserve's anger boils over, leading him to devise a vengeful scheme. He orders his unit to accompany him to a village, where they will abduct a woman to satisfy their sexual desires during their upcoming mission. Eriksson, the newest member, is horrified by the plan but is swayed by Meserve's persuasive influence. Upon reaching the village, Eriksson's protests only intensify Meserve's fury, resulting in a brutal gang rape and murder of a young village woman. The narrative then shifts to the aftermath of their return from Vietnam, where Eriksson, haunted by the atrocity, decides to seek justice by having his unit court-martialed.
