The Serpent (1916) follows the tale of a humble peasant girl named Vania, who is brutally attacked by a duke. The duke not only takes advantage of her but also kills her beloved and banishes her to London. In the bustling city, Vania rises to fame as a renowned actress. Years later, the duke attends one of her performances, unaware of her true identity. He confides in her about his son's injury, expressing his deep concern: "If anything should happen to my boy, I think it would kill me." This revelation sparks a vengeful plan within Vania. She travels to the front lines, locates the duke's son—now a paralyzed young man with one arm—and marries him. In a dramatic twist, Vania orchestrates a scenario where she is intimate with the duke just as his son enters the room, leading to a tragic and shocking conclusion.
