Moses and Aaron (1975)

1975 · Movie · 107 min. · Austria

Moses and Aaron (1975) is a cinematic adaptation directed by the French filmmaking duo Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, inspired by Arnold Schoenberg's unfinished opera of the same name. Initially released in 1973, this film was showcased in the United States during 1975 under the title "Aaron and Moses." It stands as one of three films by Straub and Huillet based on Schoenberg's works, alongside a preceding short film and a later adaptation of the one-act comic opera "From Today to Tomorrow." The movie preserves the incomplete nature of the original opera, with the third act featuring a single shot (accompanied by no music) as Moses delivers a monologue derived from Schoenberg's notes. Filmed on location in Italy and Egypt, the production employed the same cinematography team as Straub and Huillet's "Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach.
