Dark Victory (1939) follows the story of Judith Traherne, a vibrant and wealthy 23-year-old sportswoman portrayed by Bette Davis. Judith begins to experience severe headaches and double vision, prompting her family doctor, Dr. Parsons (Henry Travers), to recommend a consultation with a renowned specialist. Dr. Frederick Steele (George Brent) conducts a thorough examination and discovers a malignant glioma brain tumor. He performs surgery to remove the tumor but learns from the biopsy results that Judith has less than six months to live. Dr. Steele and Judith's best friend, Ann King (Geraldine Fitzgerald), decide to keep this dire prognosis a secret from her. As Judith and Dr. Steele grow closer, they fall in love and plan to marry, intending to start a new life together in Vermont. However, Judith stumbles upon the correspondence from the laboratory, leading to a deep depression. She turns to alcohol and a promiscuous lifestyle. Eventually, she comes to terms with her condition and resolves to spend her remaining time with the love of her life.
