Django (1966) is a seminal spaghetti Western directed by Sergio Corbucci, featuring Franco Nero as the tough, enigmatic mercenary who hauls a mysterious coffin behind him. This film, alongside Sergio Leone's Clint Eastwood trilogy, significantly influenced the genre. Django (1966) follows the protagonist as he decimates waves of antagonists with his machine gun, executes a daring gold heist from a Mexican military stronghold, and then schemes to betray his bandit allies. Corbucci, who co-wrote the story, crafts a relentlessly violent narrative of rival gangs exploiting a grimy, blood-soaked border town, embracing the genre's brutal nature. The movie commences with a harrowing scene where a woman is brutally whipped by a group of lecherous bandits, only to be rescued by even more ruthless gunmen who plan to set her ablaze. This film's intense violence led to its ban in England and cuts in the U.S. It inspired numerous unofficial sequels, with Nero returning two decades later for the official follow-up, Django Strikes Again. Following this gritty role, Nero went on to play the singing medieval hero Lancelot in Camelot!
