I Was a Shoplifter (1950) follows the story of police detective sergeant Jeff Andrews, who goes undercover to infiltrate a gang of shoplifters by staging his own arrest for petty theft. Simultaneously, Faye Burton, a small-time shoplifter and the daughter of a respected judge, is coerced into joining the gang. The gang uses a confession she signed during a previous encounter with a department store detective to blackmail her. Jeff and Faye's journey to uncover the mastermind behind the shoplifting ring is fraught with challenges, and their progress is slower than the audience's understanding of the situation, despite having less information.
