The Man of the Year (2003) follows the story of Máiquel, a man from Rio who is initially directionless and reserved. His life takes a dramatic turn when he loses a wager and is forced to dye his hair blonde. This seemingly small change boosts his self-assurance, leading him to ask Cledir, his hairdresser, on a date. When he is mocked by a local troublemaker, Máiquel's response is violent, resulting in the death of the young man. Instead of facing legal consequences, Máiquel is hailed as a hero by the community, and the police turn a blind eye. His newfound status brings him closer to Cledir, and he also takes in Érica, the 15-year-old girlfriend of his victim, who seeks his protection. As Máiquel's life becomes intertwined with these two women, he is also offered lucrative job opportunities by a group of wealthy individuals looking to eliminate local criminals. The narrative explores the complexities of Máiquel's relationships with Cledir and Érica, and the moral dilemmas he faces as he navigates his new life.
