The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums (1939) is set in Tokyo during 1885, where Kikunosuke, the son of the renowned actor Kikugoro, is celebrated for his stage performances. However, his acclaim is largely attributed to his father's fame rather than his own talent. Otoku, the wet-nurse of his brother, is the only one who honestly assesses Kikunosuke's abilities and believes in his potential. Kikunosuke develops feelings for Otoku, but their potential union angers Kikugoro, leading Kikunosuke to depart from his family. He embarks on a journey to prove himself as a skilled actor, independent of his father's legacy.
