Memento (2000) follows Leonard (Guy Pearce), an insurance investigator grappling with severe memory loss due to a traumatic brain injury he suffered while trying to prevent his wife's murder. His life is a constant struggle, managed through a system of tattoos and Polaroid photographs that help him piece together his fragmented memories. The narrative of the film is presented in a non-linear fashion, with forward flashes of future events interspersed with a telephone conversation Leonard has in his motel room, where he draws parallels between his current predicament and a past client's case. As Leonard navigates a web of complex characters and relationships, his relentless pursuit of vengeance for his wife's murder is complicated by the realization that his memory loss may render any closure meaningless.
