The Cub (1915)

The Cub (1915) follows the journey of a carefree journalist, Steve Oldham, dispatched by the Louisville Gazette to report on a long-standing dispute in the countryside. The conflict originated when Jim Renlow's pig was discovered feasting on Bill White's turnips. Despite Steve's initial intention to stay neutral, he finds himself drawn into the local drama when he develops feelings for Alice Renlow, a dedicated schoolteacher. At a community "Truce Dance" aimed at raising funds for Alice's salary, Steve, under the influence of alcohol, innocently kisses Peggy White, leading to a misunderstanding that Peggy shares with her family. This miscommunication results in Steve being taken captive by the Whites, who plan to execute him at dawn. Alice, in a desperate attempt to save Steve, appeals to Tilden White, who harbors romantic feelings for her. Tilden agrees to let Steve go, but only if he leaves alone. When Steve refuses, Alice reveals her true feelings for him. Their declaration of love leads to a dramatic confrontation that culminates in the destruction of the house they are in. Fortunately, the cavalry, alerted by Steve's newspaper, arrives just in time. The two feuding families are finally reconciled, and Steve and Alice prepare to embark on their new life together.
