The Scarlet Letter (1973) is set in the 17th century in the Puritan town of Salem, where Hester Prynne is publicly shamed and forced to wear a scarlet "A" on her clothing, signifying her adultery and the birth of her child out of wedlock. For seven years, she has kept the identity of her lover a secret. A mysterious older man arrives in Salem, unrecognized by the townsfolk but known to Hester as her long-lost husband. Assuming the alias Chillingworth, he disguises himself as a doctor, secretly observing Hester and relentlessly seeking to uncover the identity of her paramour. His suspicions soon fall on Arthur Dimmesdale, a young and tormented pastor. As Chillingworth's psychological torment intensifies, Dimmesdale's mental state begins to deteriorate. A ship arrives in Salem, offering Hester a potential escape for herself, her daughter, and her lover. However, the question remains whether Dimmesdale will choose to flee with her.
