That Brennan Girl (1946) kicks off on Mother's Day, 1938, with 14-year-old Ziggy Brennan (Mona Freeman) purchasing a gardenia for her mother. Ziggy's joy fades upon discovering her mother, Natalie (June Duprez), inebriated with an unknown man. Natalie introduces Ziggy as her "sister" and warns her against using the term "mother." Natalie later shares some unconventional wisdom, suggesting that Ziggy learn certain tricks to avoid working. Ziggy takes this advice literally, stealing a valuable pin from a classmate and getting expelled. Years later, Ziggy crosses paths with Denny Reagan (James Dunn), who lures her into a fraudulent moving scheme. Ziggy's life takes a dramatic turn when she meets and marries a naval officer, Mart Neilson (William Marshall), who is later killed in action. Ziggy faces more hardships as she loses custody of her baby due to negligence by a babysitter. Denny, now reformed, helps Ziggy appeal for custody, ultimately winning back her child after she proves her maternal instincts by caring for an abandoned baby.
