The Lighthouse of the Whales (2016) follows the story of Beto, a solitary individual who serves as a ranger in the remote Peninsula Valdes National Park in Chubut, Argentina. Beto's tranquil life, dedicated to observing orcas, seals, and sea lions, is disrupted by the arrival of Lola, a Spanish woman who journeys from Madrid with her 11-year-old autistic son, Tristán. Lola and Tristán have seen Beto in a documentary about whales and seek his assistance in a therapeutic endeavor. Lola hopes that Beto's unique environment and connection with nature can help Tristán overcome his isolation. Initially hesitant, Beto agrees to assist Tristán, taking him on boat rides along the coast to encounter orcas, despite regulations prohibiting close contact. Over time, Tristán begins to show emotional responses, while Beto faces pressure from his superiors who view orcas as dangerous predators. Meanwhile, Lola grapples with personal issues back in Spain, adding layers of complexity to their shared journey.
