The Lion in Winter (1968) unfolds during the Christmas of 1183, as the cunning and aging King Henry II orchestrates a gathering with the intent to designate his heir. He invites a cast of influential figures to the festivities: his manipulative yet imprisoned spouse, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine; his paramour, Princess Alais, whom he aims to wed; his three ambitious sons (Richard, Geoffrey, and John), each vying for the throne; and the shrewd young King Philip of France, who is also Alais' sibling. As the destiny of Henry's realm hangs in the balance, each participant resorts to their own tactics of deceit and betrayal to secure their ambitions.
