The Ice Storm (1997) unfolds in November 1973, in the affluent town of New Canaan, Connecticut. The nation is gripped by the Watergate scandal, and the Beatles are embarking on solo ventures. The Hood family, meanwhile, is navigating a tumultuous period. Ben Hood (Kevin Kline) is entangled in an affair with his neighbor, Janey Carver (Sigourney Weaver), who seems strangely disinterested. Ben’s wife, Elena (Joan Allen), is engrossed in self-help literature and growing weary of her husband’s transparent deceits. Their daughter, Wendy Hood (Christina Ricci), is exploring new experiences with the Carver brothers, Mikey (Elijah Wood) and Sandy (Adam Hann-Byrd). On the day after Thanksgiving, Paul Hood (Tobey Maguire) flees to the city to chase after a wealthy girl from his prep school. Ben and Elena attend a cocktail party that evolves into a "key party," a wife-swapping event for couples seeking excitement or escape. As the night progresses and the family members pursue their individual romantic escapades, a historic ice storm sweeps through the region. The ensuing events, a mix of humor, tragedy, and revelation, force the Hood family to confront each other in the stark, cold light of the morning after the storm.
