El Cid (1961) is set in 11th-century Spain, a land torn between Christian realms and Moorish territories. The film follows the journey of Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar, later known as El Cid, who is determined to unify his homeland and drive out the invaders. Known for his bravery and strategic mind, El Cid faces accusations of treason for his leniency towards certain emirs. His accuser, Gomez, who is also the father of his fiancée Chimene, is killed in a duel. Chimene, seeking vengeance, fails in her plot, and Rodrigo marries her, though their union remains unconsummated and she retreats to a convent. Following the death of King Ferdinand, his kingdom is divided among his children, leading to internal strife. Sancho, one of Ferdinand's sons, is assassinated by the African warlord Ben Yssef, who exploits the chaos. Alfonso, another son, claims the throne and exiles El Cid. Chimene, recognizing her husband's nobility, joins him but returns to the convent with their children when he goes to battle against Ben Yssef. Over the years, El Cid becomes a legendary warrior but refuses to aid Alfonso directly, instead laying siege to Valencia. He ultimately sends the city's crown to Alfonso, who rushes to his side, only to find El Cid gravely wounded by a stray arrow. With Chimene by his side, El Cid prepares for a final stand against the Moors.
