Ninotchka (1939) follows the journey of a rigid and disciplined Communist Party envoy dispatched to the City of Lights to finalize the sale of the Grand Duchess Swana's precious gems on behalf of the Soviet government. As she immerses herself in the extravagant lifestyle of Paris, she crosses paths with Leon, a lawyer and occasional paramour of the Grand Duchess. The two find themselves drawn to each other, unaware of their respective roles in the unfolding drama. Meanwhile, the Grand Duchess initiates legal action against the USSR, claiming ownership of the jewels. The narrative unfolds into a complex tapestry of intrigue and deceit as Swana attempts to coerce Ninotchka into abandoning her mission in Paris.
