Revenge of the Barbarians (1960) is set in 408 AD, where the Visigoths, under the leadership of Alaric, invade northern Italy. The city of Ravenna becomes a battleground, and the Roman legions, bolstered by the strategic prowess of Emperor's sister, Galla Placidia, manage to halt the Goths' advance. Alaric, enraged by the losses, swears vengeance. When the Visigoths return to Ravenna, Placidia cleverly redirects them towards Rome, leaving her in Ravenna with a small contingent of soldiers. The Visigoths wreak havoc on Rome, capturing Placidia in the process. The Western Roman Emperor, Honorius, dispatches Olympius, consul of Rome, to secure Placidia's release. The fate of the negotiations hinges on a duel between Olympius and Ataulf, the Visigoth leader. Olympius emerges victorious and is honor-bound to free one female prisoner. He chooses his wife, Sabina, whom he had married for political reasons but had grown to love. Placidia, who harbored feelings for Olympius, is compelled to marry Ataulf. This union satisfies the Visigoths' thirst for vengeance, and Ravenna is spared from further destruction.
