The Matriarch (2007) follows the unconventional journey of Martta (Sanna-Kaisa Palo) and Otto (Heikki Kinnunen), a duo of itinerant tailors who profess to be illegitimate descendants of the Romanovs. They traverse Finland, seeking employment, accompanied by their two intellectually challenged adult sons, Hippo (Tuomas Uusitalo) and Repe (Tatu Siivonen), along with their equally eccentric son-in-law, Ventti (Toni Wahlstrom). The family occasionally resorts to criminal activities when legitimate means fall short, and the sons' violent tendencies escalate as Otto's health declines, leaving Martta to lead the family enterprise. Their lives take an abrupt turn when the brothers assault and kidnap a mute man they refer to as Kaspar (Samuli Vauramo), who joins their travels and captures the affection of Martta's youngest daughter, Lara (Jenni Banerjee). The family's dynamics are further disrupted when a long-lost half-brother, Laszlo (Peter Franzen), resurfaces and attempts to seize control of the clan from his mother.
