The Sleeping Cardinal (1931) kicks off the series of five films featuring Arthur Wontner as the iconic Sherlock Holmes. The story revolves around Ronald Adair, a card cheat who is haunted by a spectral voice emanating from a painting of a cardinal. The voice menaces him with exposure and ruin unless he joins a criminal scheme involving counterfeit currency.
