The Wretches (1960) is a deliberate and atmospheric melodrama featuring Michele Morgan and Robert Hossein, who also directs, as Thelma and Jess, an American pair settling into a rundown Parisian district. The couple is still grappling with the tragic loss of their only child in a past car accident. Thelma seeks solace in alcohol, while Jess is withdrawn and melancholic. When they employ a maid to assist with household chores, she develops feelings for the reserved Jess. Initially, her affection seems straightforward, but as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that things are not as they appear.
