Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern (TV) (2013) follows the story of two young orphans, Emil and Inga, who find solace in each other's company amidst the harsh conditions of Mrs. Landfried's orphanage. The children are forced to work in a grim workshop, producing shoes that are sold by the orphanage, with most of the profits kept by Mrs. Landfried. The eldest orphan, Franz, who has been promoted to foreman, is the only one who receives a bonus. As Christmas approaches, the children are tasked with selling matchsticks in town, with the promise of a goose dinner for the winner and a caning for those who fail to meet the sales target. After a chase through the market, Franz emerges victorious and even gets to cane Emil, but he lets him off with a loud show of mercy. Inga, meanwhile, escapes the orphanage, dreaming of her late parents welcoming her home whenever she strikes a match. Emil, with the help of a kind-hearted police officer they met in the market, reveals the truth about the tyrannical conditions at the orphanage, leading to the replacement of Mrs. Landfried with a more compassionate administrator.
