Dragon Ball Z Kai (TV Series) (2009) is a reimagined adaptation of the beloved anime series, Dragon Ball Z, created to celebrate the original's 20th anniversary. It debuted on Fuji Television on April 5, 2009, offering enhanced high definition visuals, audio, and special effects, along with a re-recorded dialogue track by the original voice cast. Due to the loss of most original animation materials, new frames were generated by digitally tracing existing footage and adding softer colors, minimizing damage to the original animation. Some scenes were cropped or expanded with new hand-drawn elements to fit the designated aspect ratio. The series condenses the original content, omitting certain story arcs and reducing the episode count from 291 to 100. The premiere episode achieved an 11.3% viewer rating, outperforming One Piece but trailing behind Crayon Shin-Chan. Subsequent episodes saw slight dips in ratings. The series features two theme songs: the opening "Dragon Soul" and the ending "Yeah! Break! Care! Break!", both performed by Takayoshi Tanimoto. While the story footage is derived from existing material, the opening and closing sequences were created anew with different animation techniques. The musical score is composed by Kenji Yamamoto, known for his work on several Dragon Ball Z video games, rather than the original series' composer, Shunsuke Kikuchi.
