Driftwood (1947) follows the journey of a young girl named Jenny, who at just six years old, finds and rescues a collie dog that is the sole survivor of a plane crash. The dog wears a tag indicating it is destined for a medical laboratory to provide blood for a spotted fever vaccine. Dr. Steven Webster, upon meeting Jenny and the dog, decides to take them both under his care. However, his fiancée, Susan, is less than enthusiastic about the new additions to their lives. Dr. Webster has a vision to establish a hospital for the town, but his plans are thwarted by the town mayor. Tensions rise, leading to the destruction of Webster's lab and the escape of ticks carrying spotted fever. The town falls into chaos as residents rush to get vaccinated. Tragically, Jenny contracts the disease and her life hangs in the balance.
